This is a short lesson that goes well at the beginning of a poetry unit. It defines the difference between poetry and prose, which is a good way to get students thinking about "what is poetry?"

However, I have had a lot of success with this lesson. As it says in the description, the lesson is quite "simple" but it is a very effective way to get students to understand the difference between poetry and prose. By showing the students a text written in prose form and poetry form, and then having them explain in their own words why one is different than the other - I think its a great way to kick start a poetry unit.
Also, the short vocab list is pasted 6 times so you can print them, cut them out, and give them to your students, so they don't waste time copying the list themselves.
Finally, the Ind. Writing should have been taken off the document. That was my fault. I usually begin my English classes with 7 minutes of time for students to write whatever they like in their journals.
