Create productive computer centers with video tutorials! This is the fifth of a 6-part set of video tutorials designed to guide students through the process of using PowerPoint’s intermediate and advanced tools to create an Animal Habitat Game. During the 6-part series, students will hear the teacher’s voice and see her mouse movements as they learn how to use the following tools in PowerPoint: Background Fill Effects; WordArt; Font Color/Style/Size; Clip Art; Resizing; Inserting New Slides; Inserting Internal Hyperlinks; Hiding Slides; Jumping to “Correct” and “Incorrect” feedback slides.

The videos were designed to help differentiate instruction in the computer lab at our school. They allow advanced students to work independently to challenge themselves with increasingly complex tasks, while freeing up the teacher to assist any students who are struggling. Teachers can have the students view the videos as is, or they can simply use the videos as guidelines for creating their own lesson plans.

This particular video is 3 1/2 minutes long, and the others in the series are each 2-5 minutes long. Students can work independently by watching the video, pausing/rewinding as necessary to review the techniques, and then attempting the steps to complete the project on their own. The project will take approximately five or six 30-minute sessions for most students to complete. At the end of the lessons, each student will have created a unique Animal Habitat game that can be played by the younger students at your school. They will also have advanced knowledge of PowerPoint, and the ability to create other educational games in the future!

Note: All of the videos are in AVI format, but they have been zipped to make uploading easier. To unzip them, you can download WinZip for free. Then, all you have to do is right-click on the file to open it and play the video. I have also created an optional color-coded list of “Steps for Creating an Animal Habitat Game” and an Animal Habitat template to get students started. You can find these in my Teacher’s Palette store.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

After receiving a Master's degree in TESOL, I started my career by teaching adult ESL, and then moved on to teach Developmental Writing at a university. After seven years of teaching at the college level, I decided that I wanted to teach children. I have taught 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. I am currently working as a full-time technology teacher for all of the students at our K-5 elementary school.
