This PowerPoint takes about 15 minutes to share with your class via projector and/or SmartBoard. You could also load the file onto your classroom computers and allow students to rotate to them to view the presentation and take notes.
The types of figurative language covered in this PPT are alliteration, metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and personification. This is not a comprehensive review of all figurative language terms, but this is a sufficient introduction for middle school students and probably enough of a focus for upper elementary during a poetry unit.
There is a hyperlink on the last slide that takes you to an online quiz that can be used to review terms with your students. This, of course, is an optional activity that could be graded or just for fun!
