Students confront the many dimensions of President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. In addition, they explore the moral dilemma faced by Paul Tibbetts as he is recruited to pilot the Enola Gay. Tibbetts in an excerpt from the film, Above and Beyond, must weigh the consequences of killing thousands of Japanese civilians versus saving thousands of Americans by eliminating the necessity of invading Japan. I liked the concept of this lesson, but for the price I wish it included some sort of fact sheets that students could draw from to support their arguements. It does give me a starting point for developing a more detailed set of materials and plan.
