This activity packet/mini-lesson contains a list of all 50 states who will be voting on November 4, 2008 to elect our new President. It also includes the number of electoral votes which each state has. Students are asked to watch election coverage and record the winners of each state as well as the total number of electoral votes each receives. Upon completion of this activity, there is a map included with a key on which students are assigned to color in the blue states (Democrats) and red states (Republican) as well as others (purple). This is a great eye opener to have waiting on students' desks the morning after the elections.
See also: My "Track the Candidates" map on which students can keep track of the states which each candidate visits during the fall campaign.

I have taught for 36 years at the 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Fifth grade is my first love. I teach all major subject areas. In addition to my regular classroom duties, I have taught in a Basic Skills summer school program for many years as well as taught workshops to co-workers in whole language and technology. My other duties at school include being "Teacher in Charge" and Student Council advisor.
