Problem Solving Design Zoo Math Challenge Common Core Standards:
Numbers and Operations in Base Ten and Measurement and Data
This is the opening scenario for this 35-page Design a Zoo zipped file activity... "Congratulations! You and your team of engineers and zoologists have convinced the WZA (World Zoological Association) that your team is the right one to design the next world zoo. Your team is one of five finalists in the entire world who have been asked to design the first phase for a zoo. After your team comes up with the first phase for the Dream Zoo, it will then send the proposal to the WZA for review. Your team will want to make sure that what it chooses for this zoo will be a major attraction for hundreds of thousands of people every year! So, good luck to you and your team."
This 35-page document is intended to help your students enjoy math as they problem solve. To make the activity interesting some of the zoo animals included are extinct (dinosaurs, woolly mammoth, dodo bird, etc.), endangered, or just regular animals.
Everything that a teacher would need is included (handouts, answer key, extension activities, rubric, etc.). Students are given 60 million dollars to purchase animals, construct buildings, and build paths for a zoo. Prices of animals are based on the size of the animal and its sociability. Students will need to purchase animals from the five categories (mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, and invertebrates). Depending on your class, you may have to adjust the amount that is spent.
This zipped file contains 8 Microsoft Word documents and also the same 8 documents saved in PDF.
