On  September 4, 2012,  Dana G. asked:
I was just wondering about the split infinitive in your example "to properly punctuate." I was taught to not split infinitives, and I teach my students that. I'm just a second year teacher, though. Is there anything I need to change in my thinking?

On  September 4, 2012Laura Torres answered:
Hello,
Here's what my textbook says: "A split infinitive is acceptable when the intervening modifier is short, especially if the alternative would be awkward or ambiguous." My understanding is that some strict grammarians still use the rule, but in general, it is not frowned upon.
Here's what Grammar Girl has to say about it if you are interested:

If you would like me to change the quiz that includes the split infinitive so as not to confuse your students, I'd be more than happy to send you a corrected version. Just e-mail me so I can attach it and e-mail you back. laura@lauratorres.com
