I used this bulletin board display for the first day of school to impress upon my students how important respect is to me, and how most every rule falls under respect. Using the well know song (R-E-S-P-E-C-T, this is what it means to me...) I helped me kids break down the big concept of respect to see what it really means, what it looks like.

This bulletin board display is all text. There are very big (400 font size) letters that spell respect, along with dash to seperate the letters, and then in slightly smaller font "...this is what it means to me!" to put across the bottom. I also have a included a list of about 20-some things that show respect (i.e. speaking appropriately, trying your best, saying please & thank you, expressing your emotions appropriately, etc.)

The way I used this board: I had the letters and the phrase posted on the board when the students arrived. I then randomly handed out the "what respect looks like" slips and each student took turns sharing it and posting it to the board. As the student posted it, I added comments as needed.

To help make it extra memorable, I played the song after we "completed" the board. I kept the board posted the entire year. At various times throughout the year when it seemed that they were struggling with respect, I'd play the song and then do a quick review (using the bulletin board).
