Our REVISED Essay Architect Writing System is an all-inclusive, step-by-step method you can use to walk your students through the often confusing process of writing the five paragraph essay. Includes 238 pages of reproducible worksheets, examples, teaching guides, graphic organizers, terminology, models, rubrics, sample essays, and more. This second book in our Essay Writing Series best helps those students who are able to write at least one paragraph in response to an essay prompt. (For those who struggle with one paragraph, or with basic sentence and writing structure, see the first book in this series, the Essay Apprentice Writing System).

Designed for use in grades 6-12, Essay Architect will help you teach everything your students need to know about writing a great essay, from the essential structure and vocabulary of the essay, to in depth practice on the elements of the essay, to reviewing and peer-editing model and non-model essays, to learning the specifics of how to write and organize each type of essay, to polishing the essay in its final stages. Students have the opportunity to learn and practice every step of the process before actually writing an essay, and learn how to evaluate and assess other essays to recognize high-quality, well-written essays, as well as poorly-written, weak writing. Best of all, we have included in-depth study of each type of essay, including essay-specific organizers, prompts, notes, peer-editing checklists, and rubrics for Persuasive/Argumentative essays, Cause and Effect essays, Compare and Contrast Essays, Descriptive Essays, Informative/Explanatory Essays, Reflective/Personal Narrative Essays, Response to Literature Essays, and Research Papers.

What is the difference between Architect and Apprentice? Would it be beneficial to purchase both? Or is one geared to a certain grade level? I teach Sped H.S. students with very poor writing skills/reluctant writers and am currently rolling over in to Common Core.

Thank you
Tyra

Hi there! Basically, I explain the difference between the two like this: If you have students who are able to write at least one or two relatively decent paragraphs, then you want Essay Architect. Essay Apprentice is for lower grades OR for students who are really struggling to write even one decent paragraph. Essay Apprentice takes them through the process of writing step-by-step, from learning how to write simple, fun things to writing a decent sentence, to writing several sentences into a paragraph, then to writing more than one paragraph. From there, they work to create an essay as a group, then on their own. Once they can write at least one or two decent paragraphs and kind of understand how to approach an essay, then Essay Architect takes over. It sounds to me as if your very poor and reluctant writers would do best with Essay Apprentice. There is a TON of repetition and scaffolding, which really helps those who are struggling or resistant. Hope that helps!

Is there a page in the book that breaks down the alignment to the ccls? Or is that separate?

HI, is this Common Core aligned? Do you know if there is anything missing from this product (that is not in the Common Core standards for writing grades 9-10?) Thanks so much!

Hi there! Yes, this is Common Core aligned. As far as it missing anything.... I worked very hard to integrate the many nuances of the common core, so everything has been included. The only thing is that in order to "hit" everything, you would have to make sure that your students are working on their papers using technology, that they are working on their papers in a process format (writing and revising) and that they are receiving feedback from peers and adults in the process. Hope this helps!

Hi there! The PDF is in an uneditable format. If you wish to alter anything, you will have to retype it into a new document. This is because of copyright restrictions and limitations of use. Thanks for your interest!

I am the reading specialist and help struggle readers and writers in a 5th and 6th grade building. I do not know which Essay Architect Writing System to purchase, for you have two on your list? Is the Revised one okay for struggle students too? I also would like a copy of the Common Core alignment to this material. I want to purchase the best product for the money due to very limited resources in this new configuration of our district. Thank you for your advice.

Hi there! Thanks for your interest, Teresa! The Essay Architect Writing System is basically designed for writers who are able to put together at least one or two paragraphs, but struggle to put together a 5 paragraph essay. Our Essay Apprentice Writing System is designed for those struggling with putting together even a paragraph--and it works them through a few creative writing activities, to sentences, to a paragraph, to eventually getting them to write a few paragraphs. That is where Essay Architect basically takes over. The REVISED Essay Architect has been "cleaned" up to include more activities and resources for you to teach. It sounds to me as if Essay Apprentice http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Essay-Apprentice-Writing-System-179-Pages-for-Struggling-Writers is best fitting for your situation. Let me know which one you decide to purchase, and I can send you the Common Core alignment. If you have further questions, feel free to email me at kbowers@4secondarysolutions.com.

Hello again! You know I LOVE your novel guides, but now I'm checking out your Architect and Apprentice Writing systems. Are there any worksheets that repeat between the two downloads and if so, how many? Thanks bunches!

Hello Skittl! Some of the concepts repeat between the two, especially near the end of Essay Apprentice, because it is designed to be a sequential system (Essay Architect then Essay Apprentice). However, there are only a few pages that are actually the same in both guides, such as our essay structure graphic organizer and MAYBE one or two that look familiar, but are not exactly the same. Otherwise, they just build on each other with unique exercises for each one! Hope this helps...and thanks for being such a wonderful customer!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Secondary Solutions is the endeavor of a high school English teacher who could never seem to find appropriate materials to help her students master the necessary concepts at the secondary level. She grew tired of spending countless hours researching, creating, writing, and revising lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, tests and extension activities to motivate and inspire her students, and at the same time, address those ominous content standards! Before the inception of Secondary Solutions, materials that were available were either juvenile in nature, skimpy in content, or were moderately engaging activities that did not come close to meeting the content standards on which her students were being tested. Frustrated and tired of trying to get by with inappropriate, inane lessons, she finally decided that if the right materials were going to be available to her and other teachers, she was going to have to make them herself! Mrs. Bowers set to work to create one of the most comprehensive and innovative Literature Guide sets on the market. Joined by a middle school teacher with 21 years of secondary school experience, Secondary Solutions began, and has matured into a specialized team of intermediate and secondary teachers who have developed for you a set of materials unsurpassed by all others. Mrs. Bowers, Founder and President of Secondary Solutions, is now currently running Secondary Solutions from home while she raises her precocious four year old daughter!
