Lesson plans for RL.4.2 Summarizing and Finding a Theme with Ella Enchanted address Common Core State Standard Reading Literature 4.2. This three-part module teaches fourth grade students to summarize short stories and chapters, as well as find a theme.
In Part One, students learn to summarize text focusing on key events in the plot. Students first learn what a summary should include and study examples from “The Three Little Pigs” and “Cinderella.” The teacher models how to summarize Chapter One of Ella Enchanted then provides guided practice with Chapter Two. After sufficient practice, students are asked to summarize chapters independently.
Part Two teaches students how to find a theme and explain it in a paragraph. The teacher models the process by determining and defending three possible themes for “The Three Little Pigs.” Students practice the process themselves by finding a theme for a traditional Cinderella story and supporting it in a paragraph.
Part Three provides a differentiation piece for high ability (gifted and talented) learners. Students connect summary and theme by writing lessons learned by Ella.
Rubrics for both summarizing and finding theme are included in this module.
Two companion Power Point presentations, also created by Brenda Kovich for the Common Core Literature Series, are available to support this module. “RL.4.2 Summarizing” supports Part One, and “RL.4.2 Finding a Theme” supports Part Two.
This product is now available as part of the Ella Enchanted Bundle, which also includes lesson plans for RL.4.1 Answering Questions, RL.4.3 Describing Characters, RL.4.7 Determining Point of View, and RL.4.9 Comparing Cinderella Stories.
