PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Have you been told that you must "do" RTI? Yet have been given no direction, no training, no intervention resources or no progress monitoring tools? Then this is the packet for you. This packet is not the interventions...I do however, have an RTI Reading Interventions Menu (free) HERE. This product will help you progress monitor those interventions. In RTI, it's simply not enough to provide interventions to struggling readers, we must have proof, with data points, to prove that the interventions are working (or in some cases, not working). No longer can teachers recommend a student for testing based on hunches, sixth senses and 35 years of classroom experience. This product helps a teacher accomplish the task of collecting the progress monitoring data points for interventions in the reading areas of phonics, fluency and comprehension, including fluency skills listed in the Foundational Skills reading strand of the Common Core for ELA for grades 2 - 5. This packet is also ideal for interventionists, tutors or home school teachers of 1st - 5th graders or any teacher, interventionist, special education teacher, tutor or home school that works with 2nd -6th grade students reading at least one to two years below grade level.

Included in this product are the following:
A Quick Start Guide (1 page)
A Comprehensive Guide to RTI Progress Monitoring with Fluency (10 pages)
60 Fluency Passages-(aligned with the lexile system) with word count
60 (duplicate) Fluency Passages without word count
10+ Student Fluency Graphs (for students and teachers)
2 Teacher Graphs for documenting Progress Monitoring (editable)
1 Fluency Passages Grade-to-Lexile Correspondence Table
1 Terms of Use

In addition to the 60 fluency passages that I have written and created (also known as R-CBM's) I have written a 10 page comprehensive guide to understanding the role, purpose and rationale of progress monitoring as an essential and necessary component of the RTI process from my experiences of implementing RTI for the past five years, in a very easy to read and understand format. Of the four research based ways to measure comprehension; fluency timings, oral retellings, multiple-choice questions and cloze, fluency timings show the highest correlation to reading comprehension of these four ways.

These passages can also be used for homework or in your classroom at a fluency center for those students who are trying to improve or just maintain their fluency growth. These passages are my original creations. Every passage is leveled according to the lexile measurement system that has been adopted by the Common Core. If you think you need just your grade level, I would ask you to consider the range and level of readers in your class. If you have students reading above and below grade level, you will need to use passages at their instructional reading level, not their grade level. With the lexile overlap that occurs (you'll notice that on the Grade-to-Lexile Correspondence Table in the Preview) there are:

20 passages in the 1st grade range
30 passages in the 2nd grade range
30 passages in the 3rd grade range
20 passages in the 4th grade range
15 passages in the 5th grade range

This fluency product is licensed for single user/single classroom use. If other teachers at other grade levels or schools are interested in these fluency passages, please send them to my store at www.hellojenjones.com. This is my original work and I have put a lot of time, effort and energy into creating it.

Please be sure to download the preview file to get a snapshot of everything that's included in this RTI: 60 Fluency Passages for Progress Monitoring Reading Instruction and Intervention product and "Follow Me" for future RTI uploads.

Wish I'd had it at the beginning of the year, but better late than never. Just in time for parent conferences, too. Thank you for all your hard work!

Update on 1/27/2014
It has been reported that the errors have been fixed. I am not trying to be rude or picky, however there are still many errors with in the passage. I found these errors by skimming quickly and have not skimmed past page 49. See examples below. I find it very important that passages are written correctly for beginning readers. I think this product has the potential to be a great product, however with errors it is unusable with students. Please continue to check the passages and fix the errors. Thanks!

Passage 6 – word count line ending with 115 – the word “with” should be replaced with “will”
Passage 11 – word count line ending with 12 – 2nd sentence is confusing to beginning/emergent readers – “Travis teaches other teachers on how to be teachers.”
Passage 17 – the passage change tense throughout the story
Passage 22 – the medal should replace metal
Passage 23 – word count line ending with 130 – insert word “to”
Passage 25 – First line - Last week my cat starting coughing.

I was looking for something just like this , but with comprehension questions , text dependent ones , can't use it without those, loved everything else, couldn't tell from preview if it had comp questions, very disappointed
On  February 2, 2014Hello Literacy answered:
I too am disappointed to be graded down becauuse I have not included something that I didn't say was included, both the preview and the product description clearly say what IS included and what you will get in the the download.

With that said, I have received other feedback from buyers, positively requesting corresponding comprehension questions...and I am working on a set of 60 assessments (5 questions each) per passage that will be out in the spring. They will be sold separately for folks like yourself that have additional assessment needs.

Thank you for shopping in my store.

Product Questions & Answers

On  October 29, 2013Kristen Mason (TpT Seller) asked:
Hi Jen - I just purchased this and can't wait to get started! For PM do you recommend that the kids just do a cold read or should they practice. For example, I have a 3rd grader (just like your example student). We'll be doing a skill focus and then doing a PM fluency probe 1x a week. Practice? Cold read? Thanks!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  October 29, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
Hi! If you are using the passages to collect and record data (for documentation) it should be a cold read of the passage. If you are using them in a fluency center or as part of your intervention itself (say like if the intervention WAS to do Repeated Readings) then you could have the child reread the same passage all week, but give them a new fresh passage on PM day. Does that make sense?
GREAT QUESTION!

Do you have any assessments that also test comprehension?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  April 17, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
If you're asking if I have any multiple choice or cloze assessments, I do not. However, please know that of those two types of comprehension assessment, in addition to retelling and fluency, research shows that fluency has the highest correlation to a child's reading comprehension over the other three ways. Hi! To answer your question, I would say, this is probably not what you want unless you will be thinking up your own questions to go with the passages. Currently I do not have comprehension questions to go with them but I am working on them, like a Q&A earlier asked. And did you say, YOU would be reading the passages to them and they would be answering questions about they listened to you read? So, you are looking for text at about the 2nd grade level, which would be Kindergarten listening comprhension level since listening comprhension levels are usually about two years above their reading level.

Part of being a fluent reader is being able to tell what you read. Not only do I want my kids to read fluently, I want them to be able to tell me what they read. Do these passages have a couple short comprehension questions at the end?

On  November 13, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
I understand that component. I am considering writing a few open-ended questions per passage. These passages are most like the Dinels ORF which ask the students to "retell" what they read, which you could also do to capture "that they can tell you what they read."

On  September 14, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
You can also figure the Accuracy in addition to wpm. Generally, any accuracy lower than 90% is considered frustrational. Does your district have fluency targets/goals for BOY/MOY/EOY? If not, I can send you our state fluency benchmarks. That will at least tell you if they are reading "on" grade level or above or below grade level. A running record will also tell you their independent or instructional level. Good luck! Jen

Hi Jen,
I love how easy you are making it to align RtII instruction to CCSS. I am interested in this product. My question is about the font used- I know "clean" fonts such as Verdana are often recommended as being easy on the eyes for developing/struggling readers. Did you do any action research or other research about using this font?
Thanks so much.

On  June 18, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
That is a fascinating question. I personally have not done action research on and what little research that has been done has been with very small test groups...not broad and generalizable to the sample population, struggling readers. BUT, I do know that fonts that are at least 14pts, san serif and easy recognizable are easier to read for dyslexic readers. With that said, most of my "handwritten" fonts fit this criteria. Good luck, and good question! Jen❤

Hi :). I was wondering, can this RTI Fluency Packet be used to track regular student fluency data? As in, can I use this to test my students every 20 days or so to see where they stand fluency wise and not rely on one assessment (DRA) to determine that?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  May 15, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
Yes, definitely!!! Even students in Tier 1, without interventions, should be checked periodically and given feedback, for sure! 20 days is a great number, that's about once a month. The average rate of improvement (ROI) for fluency in grades 2-5 is about 1 word a week. So if a student is reading 70 wpm at the beginning of any month, they should be at, at least, 74 wpm to make "hit" the next universal screening benchmark target. Good luck! Jen❤

I have taught at a school that was a DIBELS school until we stopped this year because of funding-PRAISE JESUS! Not about funding, but about DIBELS. In this packet will I find the most effective ways for my students to practice fluency and for teacher instruction? I read a lot of professional resource books and articles so if not maybe you could send me towards one. I just want to be the most effective teacher in this area. In the past we have just been a little forced to make sure students benchmarked. I taught the other strategies but after years of bad habits it is hard for students to disconnect DIBELS mode from reading mode. Thank you in advance...I feel like I wrote too much.
