This set of activities for small groups or literacy centers is designed to provide your students with lots of practice (and fun!) reading words with varying representations of the long sound of /a/.
The set includes:
* 165 long a word cards at 3 levels of
difficulty:
30 using -ain as in rain and -ay as in day
105 using other rimes for long a
30 challenge words which include various
long a rimes, such as careful,repair, and
explain
* 10 sorting mats, which can be printed on
cardstock and used as is to compare rimes,
or cut apart for a wider range of sorting
options
* A student response sheet focusing on
the rimes
* Rainy Day Bingo: 6 different boards for
your small groups, with 2 variations for
playing
* 2 board games:
* Puddle Jumpers, which can be
differentiated for your students' needs
by using different levels of word cards
* Rain, Rain, Go Away, which combines
all 3 levels of card difficulty

I've been teaching for 26 years, with the majority of my experience being in first grade. I taught Reading Recovery for 5 years, and that experience has impacted every day of my teaching since! For the past 10 years, I've enjoyed teaching a first grade literacy intervention class. It has also been my privilege to present various workshops on literacy topics at the local, state, and national level. My goal is to ignite a passion for reading and writing in young learners.
