PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Teaching and learning high frequency words doesn't have to be boring when teaching and learning Rainbow Words! This 72-page package has everything you need to set up the teaching and learning of 200 high frequency words in your primary classroom. Teaching high frequency words is a Common Core standard in K and 1st grade, but this system is ideal as a 2nd and/or 3rd grade sight word intervention and progress monitoring system. Check out the Preview to see all there is in this comprehensive year-long program...you will need nothing else to teach, assess and track high frequency words learning in your classroom. This package includes the following:

-200 Large Word Cards (10 PPTs per RW color - print options include 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, or 9 words per page)
-10 Small Rainbow Words Sheets for Small Word Rings (one per RW color)
-10 Word Check Sheets for Assessment Documentation (one per RW color)
-10 Student "Looks-At" Word Lists (one per RW color)
-10 "Congratulate Me" Sheets of Labels (one per RW color)
-10 Sheets of Student Certificates 9one per RW color)
-1 Class Recording Sheet
-1 Parent Letter introducing Rainbow Words (editable - .doc)
-1 Parent Letter soliciting help assembling Rainbow Words
-1 Rainbow Words Table - COLOR
-1 Rainbow Words Table - B/W
-1 Rainbow Words Sign for Assessment Crate
-1 Rainbow Words Binder Cover - teacher
-1 Rainbow Words Binder Cover - binder for student lists
-1 Rainbow Words Student Data Sheet
-1 Set of Rainbow Word Package Directions for TpT Buyer called "Open This First"

Please note: This word list is an adaptation of the 100 Most Frequent Words in Books for Beginning Readers by Bodrova and Semenov and Fry’s Instant Words.

This package is a large file size, so I have compressed it into a .zip file. On page 5 of the Preview, I have included step by step directions for HOW-TO unzip zipped files. If you have a Mac, click on the apple icon in the upper right corner of page 4.

This is an amazing system and I am positive you will not be disappointed. Thank you for looking and/or purchasing! I appreciate your business! After you purchase, open, and dig in, leave me feedback on the Comments and Ratings tab to earn your TpT credits.

Please also check out my Rainbow Phrases System, which is intended to be used after students have learned all rainbow words.

Thank You!

I am always struggling with the best way to teach high frequency words effectively. This looks great. Our district has recently given us a list of 111 words for 1st grade. Is it possible to use your package with the words we have been given? Can you plug in your own school's words? Thank you. It looks like there is quite a bit of overlap but the list is not exact. Thank you.

Does this have the preprimer, primer and first grade Dolch words?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  October 30, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
This word list (of 200 words and which can be seen on page 2 of the product preview) is an adaptation of the 100 Most Frequent Words in Books for Beginning Readers by Bodrova and Semenov and Fry’s Instant Words. There is no one definitive order of instruction of sight words.

On  October 9, 2013,  Buyer asked:
I recently purchased Rainbow words. I love the whole concept. I was wondering way the words don't follow the dolce list. Some more difficult words are introduced early and some words are not event on the list and other words that are not dolce words are on the list.
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  October 9, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
The words are chosen based on both Dolch and Fry lists...only 200 selected. Yes, there are more, but the words that occur most frequently in text occur in the first few lists.

On  September 18, 2013,  Laura W. asked:
I purchased this Rainbow Word pack and have almost got it ready to start! I did a pre-assessment on each student so that they start on the list that is appropriate for them. I have one first grader who knew all the words on every color lists with the exception of just 10 words. I'm making a custom list for him but was wondering if you have another list of words that would good for me to challenge this student with? Thanks for such a wonderful product...can't wait to tell my students about it!

Jen, I purchased your rainbow word pack and can't get the teacher word cards to print. In fact, I can't get anything to print in power point. It says there is an error. Do you have any suggestions?

On  August 6, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
That's weird! What version of PPT (Microsoft Office) do you have? Or maybe it's a Windows version issue. You may also try and download the most current version of Adobe Reader. Google "download the latest version of Adobe Reader" and download it and see if that helps. I have sold so many of this product with so little problems, I'm thinking the error is on your end and not with the file. BUT, if it still doesn't work after that, you should submit a ticket to TpT at the Help screen in the upper right corner of the HomePage. Thanks for your purchase, too! I appreciate you! Jen

Hi, I just found your site. I love the assessment pieces and the sorely needed organization. Are the sight words from the Dolch word lists or Frye? I'm an EC teacher and need specific words that correlate to the student's IEPs. Thank you for sharing your work and expertise! Jackie
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  July 23, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
Jackie...the words are from both lists. On one of the pages of the preview you can see all 200 words used, the 200 most frequent words. From there, you should be able to look at the words and determine if this product is what you need for your students. In this system, students learn sets of words at a time, not necessarily a pick and choose, but if there are words in the set they already know, it shouldn't be a problem, but you can decide. -Jen

Hi Jen,

I have been teaching Title for the last 6 years. This will be my first year as a classroom teacher (1st grade), so NOW I have a curriculum to follow. We use Reading Street and there are sight words/word wall words with the series. I LOVE your idea of the rainbow system with the progression of sight words and eventually phrases. It would be highly motivating to students! My actual question is how would I incorporate it with Reading Street? My concern is that the some of the words for Reading Street are introduced at different times than the Rainbow words. Would you suggest introducing them separately?
Sorry this was so lengthy, but I thought with your reading experience, you might have some advice in how to utilize it a simple way!
Thanks a bunch,
Kelley

Hi! The Rainbow Words system can really be used with any curriculum because the kids do it "on the side" meaning before the bell rings, during reading time like in a center, for homework, etc. It's just a glorified flashcard system where they all work at their own pace. Thanks for the great question! Jen❤

I just LOVE this material and I look forward to using it in September. Thank you.

I'm studying to be a teacher, and I'm in my senior year. I'm curious/ confused as how this differs from sight words, and what instruction with this would be like. Please let me know, because as I prepare to be a first year teacher, I know I want the best of the best. So if there are more benefits to using this than traditional methods I would certainly prefer this! Thank you!

In response: In this context, I would say high frequency words as you described them, as in the list of words that the students need to know as part of the common core. I'm used to seeing word walls and just repetitive exposure to the words, so if this is a different way of teaching them I'm all ears!

On  November 12, 2012Hello Literacy answered:
Not sure which traditional methods you're speaking of....if you can elaborate, I can tell you how the teaching of these 200 high frequency words is the same or different. Sight words and high frequency wordsvarevoften used synonymously but there is a slight difference between the two terms. High frequency words are most frequently used words in the English language and they occur most often in text, especially emerging text. Some high frequency words ARE sight words also but technically sight words refer to the 37 words in the English language that do not follow sound spelling patterns and can not be sounded out...therefore students learn them by sight, or what they look like not what they sound like. Hope that helps. Jen

You probably need a program to "unzip" the file. The file type is .zip which is a compressed file with several different file types in it. The best free one is, and google this "download free unzip software PK ware" and it's one of the first hits. Directions for doing this are also on the last page of the product preview slides. Let me know how that goes. If that's not it, we'll problem-solve from there. Ok? :-) Jen

My class obviously has a range of HFW word needs--basically from kindergarten to 3rd grade. Thanks!

The first 25-50 words are ideal for K. Words 1-100 are meant for 1st grade (the actual rainbow colored words) and words 101-200 are meant for 1st grade enrichment and/or 2nd grade Core (the non-rainbow words - white, gray and ivory). The lists *are* editable in my most recent product revision. I think you'll find that it's very comprehensive. Thanks for a great question!

There is quite a bit of debate at my site about how many HFW kindergarten and 1st grade students should attain by the end of the year when switching to common core. Have you found anything that gives any insight to this? What in your opinions is a good target number of HF words for kindergarten and 1st grade? Thank you!

On  September 2, 2012Hello Literacy answered:
The best way to answer this question is ask yourself, what is the text level benchmark at your school. For example, in our district, K's used to have to reach a 3/4 by the end of K, now the benchmark is 5/6. There is a core group of HFW that occur in texts up to 5/6. Target those HFW for K instruction. Let that drive your decision and not the number of words itself.

To my knowledge, and that of my county's literacy director, there is no such thing as a Common Core HFW list. If there is in fact a Common Core created HFW list, I'd love to see it. The words on the Rainbow list target all of the first 200 Dolch sight words, which are the high frequency words that the common core refer to. Dolch words *are* high frequency sight words.

I didn't look at them closely but I'm sure some of the words even are the same. Also was wondering when you start doing this with the kids (approx what month)?

Mary,
I can email the .doc versions of the lists to you so you can change the word order around, that is up to you. Most first grade lists are going to closely align to the first 100 words on this RW list because the list came from Dolch to begin with. We start the first weeks of first grade. First preassessing how far they know and differentiating their ring to that.

Well, I'm so glad you posted this question/concern because it made me go back and reread my description again. So after reading it again I can see where you would think that this bundle is only for 100 words, but it is for 200 words. The first 100 are RAINBOW colored (the first grade expectation) and the second hundred are white, ivory and gray...beyond first grade expectations. I hope that makes more sense. I have added a 5th preview slide making the fact that there are 200 words more explicit and removed the number "100" out of the product description. I think you'll find this bundle is comprehensive for your high flyers in first, and intervention for struggling 2nd or 3rd graders. This is the list from our district literacy department that is a combined list from Dolch and Frye. I hope this helps. Thank you for helping me realize this. :-) Jen
