This unit is designed to enhance reading comprehension skills including ordering events, literal recall of details, drawing conclusions, summarizing, recognizing character traits, and associating cause and effect.
Ramona The Pest consists of eight chapters. Each chapter is accompanied by three pages. The first is a vocabulary introduction and prediction page. The vocabulary activities are varied. The new words and the information presented in previous chapters are used to make predictions of what will happen in that chapter. The second page asks the students to answer questions in complete sentence form. Some questions can be answered on a very literal level, while others require the student to dig a little deeper to figure why something happened or how a character might feel. The third page is a toss-up. It could ask the student to order twelve events taken from the story. It could ask students to tell which statements are true about a chapter and which are false. Students may have to identify who said what or determine how a character felt when something happened.
At the of the unit, students are asked to select one chapter and describe its characters, setting, problem, and solution using a story map. The final page asks the student to select three adjectives that describe Ramona and find a sentence from the story that demonstrates why those adjectives were chosen. This download includes an answer key.
