Imagine if your first encounter with Martin Luther King was behind bars. "In the Jailhouse with Dr. King" takes place during the Montgomery Bus Boycott and King's first incarceration. This six page, twenty minute work of historical fiction is suitable for reader's theater or stage performance and can be adapted to include music from the Civil Rights Movement. From seven to fourteen parts, use it with students in grades 4 through 8 to improve fluency, build comprehension, and meet the CCSs. A full class set of an inspiring Civil Rights play for just three bucks! Fully reproducible: the original purchaser is licensed to reproduce one classroom set per year. Be sure to checkout the wide-variety of my professional-written Civil Rights plays, many of which were originally published in Scholastic's classroom magazines, here on TpT. Thanks!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Grades Taught:

I'm a National Board Certified teacher, a frequent contributor to Scholastic's Storyworks and Scope magazines, and the author of three books on education through Scholastic. I've developed a reputation for creating compelling read aloud plays based on African-American History, Civil Rights, and classic short stories. When not teaching the intermediate grades in southern Oregon, which I've done since 1993, I spend my time playing basketball, backpacking, and pestering kids. Contact me at lewis@jeffnet.org or visit one of my websites at www.MackLewis.com, ReadAloudPlays.com, or my public school site, dailyplatypus.com. Thanks!
