Read and Write at Home is a packet of resources to share with parents to help them create fun literacy routines at home.

You'll find:
-Parent Letter
-Suggested Literacy Routines
-Overview and Directions
-Literacy Activity Cards
-Bookplates
-Think and Read Bookmarks
-Finger Puppets
-Mini-Notes
-Writing Paper

Suggestions:

Print and distribute this resource to parents at conferences or e-mail the document to parents so they can print as needed. For each printable, you'll find a color copy with graphics, followed by a copy that can be customized by the child.

Integrate these activities into your homework routine. For example, some nights you could have students complete an activity card of their choice or read a book and respond using the questions on the Think and Read Bookmark.

Use some of the resources in the classroom. Laminate the finger puppets and activity cards and incorporate them into a classroom center activity, hand out the bookmarks as a prize, or use the bookplates to label student-created books.

Hi Erin,
My name is Maria Yetts and I have a quick question for you: What software do you use to design your products? Is it a software and fonts that are bought separately? All I have is Microsoft word which is not very appealing.. All of your work looks pretty cool, ie "Read and write at home".

Thanks in advance for your answer!

Thanks, Maria! I use Microsoft Word as well. I download free fonts from places like www.fontsquirrel.com and www.helloliteracy.com, and I've purchased clipart from various online sources like www.mygrafico.com and etsy.
I appreciate the compliment! Thank you!

Sorry, no. I wish I spoke Spanish and could do it. Maybe I can find someone to translate down the line. I agree, it would be wonderful to send home to Spanish speaking parents!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 10 years of teaching experience in the elementary grades, and 8 years as a parent. I'm passionate about creating products that combine what I know about education from both perspectives. Before staying home with my three young boys, I taught grades 3-6. I also subbed in grades K-12. I currently blog at www.smalltypes.com, where I exercise my "teacher brain" by sharing tips for parents to help them create a print-rich home. I keep up with best practices through continuing education; I volunteer in my sons' classrooms; and like most parents, I do plenty of after-school teaching to support my own kids' learning at home.
