BEST SELLER! Common Core Aligned - Your download includes directions, a grading rubric, and over 50 different prompts that students can use to respond before, during, or after their independent reading. These prompts are varied including all the major comprehension strategies as well as varying levels of Bloom's higher-level thinking questions aligned with Common Core Standards. I use this each quarter, making it harder as the year goes on, so I am often revising/tweaking the rubric. I have the students staple the rubric to the front cover of their notebook and the questions to the back cover. GREAT for after "Read to Self" and "Read to Someone" in Daily 5...students can work together and respond to their reading. We also bring it to the carpet during read aloud. This keeps the students engaged in their reading and focused on listening. They respond during or after our read aloud, and we always leave time at the end of class to share or model great writing responses/thinking! :)
The following chart of categorized prompts is on ONE page in order to make it easier for students to attach it into a notebook for reference. A grading rubric is also included that lists requirements & examples which can be attached to the front of the notebook.
Sample Questions are in the following categories:
1. Plot
2. Characters
3. Setting
4. Questioning
5. Connecting
6. Visualizing
7. Synthesizing
8. Inferring
9. Determining Importance
10. Summarizing
11. Theme
12. Other Book Responses
I like how the categories and prompts are all on one sheet, so students can see all their choices at once. Also, providing the example was helpful too. Thanks for your hard work.
I find these journal responses to be excellent for book studies. I have different groups reading different books, but they can all answer the same questions from this resource.
Great rubric, great questions.. Any way you could make a smaller version? My students use half-notebooks for reader response. Did not affect my rating though, because this is a great resource :)
