This is a great management tool to use during your Reader's Workshop mini lesson at the rug to make sure all student's questions or comments are relevant to whatever skill you are focusing on during your mini lesson. Many times while you're reading a picture book and making connections, asking questions, or seeking comments, children seem to get...well, a little off task, asking irrelevant questions and tattling more than making comments on the book or concept. :) (Anyone else?!) Therefore, each child receives a reading concept stick and holds them quietly, in their lap (or they won't get called on), and when they have a comment, they simply hold up the "Comment" side. It keeps them focused on formulating relevant, and concept oriented conversation, and eliminates other non-important comments or tattling.
In this file, you'll find 4 different concept cards (16 of each card...and of course, you can make as many copies as you want depending on your group size) that I use all the time during mini lessons.
These have been helpful to me during guided reading lessons. I have used it both in the GR groups and for the kids who are working independently in the room.

Wow! A great way to help students come out of their shell to respond.
