Included are 24 reading comprehension skills and strategies posters that will help your students remember all the good strategies and skills they've learned all year long. Use them as references during read alouds or to help students to set reading goals.

Each poster has the name of the strategy, prompts that you might ask students, a sample graphic organizer, and sample student responses with sentence frames (when applicable).

Like Daisy May below, I am also looking for a set that includes Character & Setting and Problem/Solution. I am trying to align my purchase with the skills listed in my new CA Treasures adoption. I understand that Story Structure includes character and setting. It's just that Treasures lists "Story Structure" as the strategy, and "Character & Setting" as the skill. "Problem and Solution" is a skill aligned with the strategy "Text Structure." Thanks!

The preview clearly shows the Describe Story Structure poster, which includes Characters, Setting, Problem and Solution and the relationship between all those elements. Being able to identify the characters and setting are skills needed for Describing Story Structure. You can't describe story structure without identifying the characters and setting.

I use the CA Treasures adoption and these cards were made with that program in mind. When teaching the first story, that has characters and setting as the taught skill, I use the Describe Story Structure poster and also discuss the problem and solution, which is part of story structure (text structure for narrative). I also have a poster for Understand Text Structure, which lists text structures for both narrative and expository text. This lists Problem and Solution as part of the narrative text structure (which is also story structure, "story" being interchangeable with "narrative"). I can send you a preview of that poster, if you'd like (email: commonthreads@me.com).

All of the pieces you are looking for are included in these posters, but there is not a separate poster for identify characters and setting nor a separate poster for identify problem and solution as they both fall under Describe Story Structure, which is the more global skill. A possibility when teaching characters and setting might be to cover up problem and solution with post-its. When you teach problem and solution, unveil it show the relationship between the two, indicating that they're all part of story structure (or text structure for narratives).

There is no specific order to teaching them. In fact, once you've taught something, you will revisit it throughout the year. Some skills are easier than others or could be considered prerequisite skills for other skills/strategies. I have not put the skills and strategies in any order. More concrete skills like describe story structure will be easier than make inferences.

All of the skills and strategies in this packet are what students do when thinking (comprehending) about a text. They're all verbs, most of them part of Bloom's.

Characters, setting, problem & solution are part of Describe Story Structure. Email me (commonthreads@me.com) and I can send you a picture of that page to be sure it's what you want.

Prior knowledge is part of Draw Conclusions & Make Inferences, which are very similar (see the note in the preview). Students use prior knowledge (or what they know) combined with the text to draw conclusions and make inferences. Again, I can send you photos of those pages, if you'd like.

To synthesize, a reader might draw from different comprehension strategies/skills to form an understanding of the text as a whole as well as use the details, facts, or ideas within the text. Synthesizing could include a combination of strategies/skills that would be different for each piece of text and for each student. Like summarize, it is how the reader organizes the text as a whole, using the strategies and skills included in this packet.

I have not included synthesize or summarize in this set. They're too variable, dependent on the reader and the text. There's no common graphic organizer, teacher prompts, or sentence frames that would assist students in their understanding of synthesize and summarize.
