This 21-page document has been developed as a study guide for the student on how to read and analyze non-fiction. The study guide teaches the student about the difference between 2 particular non-fiction types: objective articles and commentary articles. It also presents information on 3 basic tactics that an author might use to present information: examples, anecdotes, and facts/statistics. The study guide includes a step-by-step guide on how to read non-fiction, note pages for reading non-fiction articles, and a worksheet on "following the topic trail." The document continues with note pages for the teacher to follow (not lesson plans), suggests on how to organize the unit, and a bonus article that I use to start a non-fiction reading unit with my students, complete with questions. The document has been left as a Word document to allow you to customize the guide to your liking. Please note that this is advertised as a study guide and not a unit. The focus is on giving the student materials to work with while reading non-fiction; not on telling the teacher how to teach the unit or how to use the study guide with students. The study guide is incredibly helpful for students, and fits nicely with the changes in NY State Standards (as well as other states), PARCC Assessment, and Common Core Standards. Hope you enjoy!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As a New York State teacher of 7 years, I have come to truly understand the requirements of modern-day education. Currently a high school teacher of grades 9,11, 12, I do have experience in grades 6, 7, and 8. A 1 students to 1 computer initiative in my classroom, and the use of the latest modern technology, sets the bar in my school for 21st century learning. My age and recent tenure award have allowed me to have the fresh knowledge of successful educational practices, and creativity that will intrigue today's student.
