Have you noticed that many students fail to think during reading? I am a reading specialist and notice that many students would read the words on a page but there is very little metacognition going on. I created this bookmark for students to use symbols to represent their thinking during reading.
After much modeling and think alouds of each of these symbols, students use stickies and these symbols to represent their thinking during reading.
At the end of the reading session, students discuss their responses about specific parts of the texts using the symbols as reminders. Not only did I notice an increase in my students' comprehension with this strategy, but I also observed an increase in their motivation to read and their love of reading.
