This handout provides teachers with a variety of reading passages and questions that help assess student knowledge of main idea.
This handout focuses on the reading objective in isolation. Practice pages provide short passage excerpts followed by questions written specifically for assessing main idea.
Practice of this objective consists of four exercises. The first exercise is a transparency that can be used to instruct a whole class or a small group about the specific reading objective. It may provide a model for teachers to demonstrate a skill. The first exercise consists of a short passage followed by two questions. The remaining three practice exercises include two short passages followed by two questions each. These can be used as guided practice or individual practice to work toward mastery of the objective. An answer key for each set of exercises is provided.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Mark has thirty-four years of teaching experience in the elementary school setting. He has served as a classroom teacher, a Reading Recovery teacher, and a reading interventionist. He currently serves as a language arts interventionist in the Round Rock Independent School District located in Round Rock, Texas.
