Good readers are able to choose and use reading strategies when they come to an unknown word. These strategies include: look at the picture, say and slide, stop and think, running start, leap frog, chunk the word, substitute, and flip flop. These strategies can be taught throughout the year. This is a great resource to keep at your desk and share with your parents so these strategies can be reinforced in and out of the classroom.

I started my career in teaching in the second grade. I taught second grade for four years. I moved to teaching fourth grade. While teaching 4th grade, I got my Masters in Reading and I currently am an Intervention Specialist. I primarily assist at-risk students in reading. I also provide additional assistance to students in math as well.
