Reading and Writing K-1: Short Vowels Consolidation

This is part of a comprehensive reading and writing resource for teaching Language Arts to Kindergarten and Grade 1 and consists of the following:

1. An original story covering short vowels, consonants and common digraphs (sh.ch.th.wh). The story follows the different consonants, such as FFF Fan and LLL Lift as they try and catch troublemakers SSS Snake and RRR Raven, all the while making short vowel words with AAA Acrobat, EEE Elephant, III It, OOO Octopus and UUU Umbrella. This story format allows the teacher to touch on other important reading comprehension skills (making predictions and personal connections, explaining character feelings, summarizing the plot and learning new vocabulary) with each new phonics lesson.

2. A workbook which allows students to develop their writing systematically and at their own pace. Students are asked to write down words from the phonics family being introduced, draw the pictures of the words and make sentences with the words. The workbook also includes phonics review exercises, vocabulary practice and comprehension questions about the story. The format allows for easy differentiation and students can produce work to their full potential.

3. A detailed teacher's guide explaining the program, with suggestions about what kind of questions to ask while reading, which gestures to use to make each new letter sound memorable and which vocabulary words may be new to students.

4. Phonics word walls and suggestions and recording sheets for follow up activities.

5. Phonics spinner games

6. Alphabet cards to match the letter characters presented in the story.
