Help your students to explore the genre of realistic fiction with these FOUR minilessons (three in reading and one in writing) to help launch a realistic fiction genre study in your classroom. (These minilessons are 'scripts' that are suitable for grades 3-5.) Also included is a rubric that you can use to assess your students with during conferences and read aloud discussions.
The demonstrations for the three reading minilessons revolve around TALES OF A FOURTH GRADE NOTHING. However, I've left this document in Word Format so you can change the demonstration text to another book if you desire.
This genre study was originally written for a graduate course I took in literature for older children. Hence, there are some "academic" sections of this genre study that may or may not help you with your teaching practice. However, I wanted to leave them in since you never know what might help someone else. Enjoy!

(I also taught religious school classes to 3rd and 4th grade students.) LAST YEAR, I... -started a blog called Two Writing Teachers where we blog about the teaching of writing. -obtained a second master's degree in Literacy from Teachers College (Columbia University). -published a book with my students, which you can learn more about by going to www.theextendeddaygirls.com.
