This product is a collection of 7 no-cook recipes presented as reading comprehension passages. The idea is for students to read the passage and then follow the recipe to create the product. After they have read the passage and completed the steps listed, students answer the included comprehension questions. The passages are written in a format similar to many state testing formats, and are great practice for standardized tests without "teaching to the test". Each recipe includes a list of simple ingredients (which can be substituted easily to make allowances for food allergies), simple steps for completing the recipe, and 5 to 6 comprehension questions related to each passage. Many passages also include background information and fun facts about the ingredients.
I use these passages as a learning center with my 3rd through 5th grade students. The passages are designed to be read independently by students reading at a 3rd grade level or higher, and can be completed with minimal or no teacher assistance. None of the recipes require cooking or heating. Recipes include: "Apple-icious Turkeys", "Dessert Pizza", "Yummy Christmas Trees", "Donut Snowmen", "Spooky Witch's Brew", "School Bus Cake", and "Edible Bugs". Each recipe is also available individually through my Techers Pay Teachers store. This collection is available as a bundled package with my other "Recipes for Reading" products. The bundled package contains 27 recipe passages. Recipes have been used successfully with students with special needs. By Rebecca Bettis

I really love this product. The only thing I worry about is our state's policy about giving food to students in the classroom. Do you have anymore ideas that are without food?

Love it and thank you for making this. I was trying to find easy recipes and then making up my own questions. It was hard finding short simple one for students.

I love this! I teach Cooking Class on Saturday school! :) I love how everything is laid out that is needed, and especially that it is child-friendly!! My favorite is that it allows the kids to be independent and complete everything on their own to feel successful and proud! We are completing the Spooky Witch's Brew this Saturday!

Combining fun and easy to make recipes with a comprehension check is a very creative way to work on reading skills. The recipes look simple and kid friendly. I like how they are loosely tied with events that occur throughout the school year. I will be making the School Bus during the first week of school. Great product!
