Hi Michelle!

I was wondering if your unit has lesson plans specifically for Language Arts and Social Studies. If so how many in each? Thank you for sharing!

Hi Gabriella, Thank you for your question! A little tricky to answer... :) Every lesson/activity in this unit is integrated, eg. a lesson may include discussion, thinking and reasoning (literacy activities) while the topic is landfills...there is then an application where the children make and monitor a mini landfill...which further involves writing up their findings.

Here is a list of the topics covered by the unit: Sorting rubbish; Creating litter monsters from junk; Where does it come from, where does it go? (includes creating and monitoring a mini landfill); Packaging (includes experiments relating to magnetism, sinking and floating and waterproof materials); One man's trash is another man's treasure (recycling/reusing); Magazine madness (a whole host of language activities - reading, spelling, writing, etc) (This section is available as a free download if you would like to take a closer look!!); Making puppets from junk and putting on a puppet show; Maths from trash (includes shapes, capacity, sorting and counting, number work, time, money); Science of Sound (Sound experiments, history of the telephone, writing a dialogue, make a telephone); Junk-estra! (Making instruments and music from junk); Ready, steady...recycle! (PhysEd activities using recycled materials e.g. plastic bag football/soccer, newspaper hockey, etc)...as you can see quite a vast variety of activities. Almost all the activities involve literacy in some shape or form, whether it be discussion (oral); writing (creative, informational, dialogue, etc.); reading; spelling; word work; etc. And as the topic has a strong science/social studies connection most activities include some element of this subject. I hope this helps to make your decision easier...I am sorry I cannot give you more definite numbers of lessons...Please do download the 'Magazine Madness' freebie..this will give you a selection of just some of the literacy activities that are included. If you decide to purchase 'Recycle' you will soon see why it is difficult to actually pinpoint a number of lessons for each subject. Many of the "lessons" are "multi" activities with a number of different activities relating to the topic that all integrate with one another to form an holistic learning experience.
I am sure that you will find this resource "jam packed" with wonderful learning activities and opportunities!
Warm regards
Michelle

Subject Area:

I taught in an independent school in Port Elizabeth, South Africa for 16 years prior to the birth of my daughter. I am now self-employed as a resource developer creating thematic units, worksheets, posters and games for teachers using the wealth of knowledge and materials I developed in my years of teaching and giving private maths tuition to grade 1 to 7 children. I have developed an online resource center that teachers subscribe to to download teaching resources. You can visit my website at www.creativeclassroom.co.za.
