I began teaching in 1975 and retired in 2007. Early in that 32 years, I tried using all sorts of educational materials created by other experts. I did not consider myself an educational "expert" of any kind at that time, but I definitely had a pretty clear notion of what materials I actually needed to make my style of teaching successful. Six or seven years into the profession, still unable to find anything that really fit, I finally started cutting my own path and producing my own materials. That adventure led me to success. This novel is one of my great favorites for life. I can still remember reading it for the first time when I was sick in the hospital at the age of about ten or so. The nurses and other care givers would bring me scads of comic books, and one was a "Classic Comic" version of Red Badge. Even back at that age, I had difficulty understanding how the producers of those comic books could attach such a shallow interpretation to the story: Boy goes off to war, becomes man. No. Boy stays boy. Boy will never be a man. War has ruined him. Message of story. Read it, people!

Thank you. I always make my kids read and take quizzes. It's "old fashioned," maybe, but it's the only way I have found to make them attend to their reading responsibilities. I feel that kids need to encounter the language for themselves the first time, with no guides, a very simple and sparse introduction, and absolutely no audio-visual aids. All of those are useful, but only later, after we have read, practiced skills, and discussed the work.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Subject Area:
Retired in 2007 from 32 years of full time teaching English/Language Arts. Started selling at TeachersPayTeachers that same year. I'm still teaching summer school every year and filling in occasionally as a long-term substitute as needed. Also coached football and track for most of my career, so my approach to education has taken on attributes of "coaching" kids through skill-building experiences. I don't believe in merely passing on "declarative" language. Kids who have me as a teacher generally agree, I do things differently.
