PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Regions of the United States: Southeast region, Northeast region, Midwest region, Southwest Region, and West region.

This is a collection of all five complete units for teaching about the five regions of the United States. The listing contains units for each region: the Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West regions.

Each unit contains five separate files, for a total of twenty-five files in this collection. Each region includes a 6-page informational text packet that can be used as a "textbook chapter" when teaching about the region. While reading the complex text, your students will learn about the land, water, climate, products, natural resources, landmarks, and culture of the region. Also included is an Anticipation Guide is to be used as they read the text to guide their reading, a study guide to help them learn to label the states on a map, a 30 question quiz, and a fun "scrapbook" activity with a grading rubric. Study guides and tests now also include an optional page for the state capitals and the state abbreviations.

Because the United States can be divided into regions in many ways, please check to see if this version matches your standards. My materials marked “Five Regions” have the states divided this way:

Southeast: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia
Northeast: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont
Midwest: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin
Southwest: Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas
West: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming

If this version doesn’t match what you need, check my other listings for materials marked “Four Regions.”

While these materials were written to correspond to Florida's Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for 3rd grade Social Studies when I couldn't find anything else appropriate for my students, regions units are also perfect for 4th, 5th, or 6th graders studying the five regions of the United States.

You might also be interested in my other units for Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean.

Florida Sunshine State Standards Addressed:

SS.3.G.2.3: Label the states in each of the five regions of the United States.

SS.3.G.2.4: Describe the physical features of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

SS.3.G.2.5: Identify natural and man-made landmarks in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

SS.3.G.3.1: Describe the climate and vegetation in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

SS.3.G.3.2: Describe the natural resources in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

SS.3.G.4.1: Explain how the environment influences settlement patterns in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

SS.3.G.4.2: Identify the cultures that have settled the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

I was frustrated by our school's curriculum. My daughter has learned about NC for 4 years straight. When I was in 3rd and 4th grade we learned about all 50 states so I went searching for materials where I could teach her and came upon TpT for the 1st time. This package is really, really well done. We've completed 1 unit so far and she is looking forward to the others. I highly recommend this unit. The author put a lot of time and creativity into it.

Great resource for regions - well organized & practical. The students enjoy the activities. One complaint - we started w/ the Midwest (as that is our Region) and would very much like to see the "Coney Dog" portions changed to "Corn Dog"!! Coney Dogs originated from Coney Island - not anywhere in the Midwest Region. Also, many grapes are grown in our region - so the test question using a drawing of grapes may be improved by substituting bananas or oranges (a tropical fruit?) Thanks!

On The West packet the answer key for states and capitals is wrong (it is from the Midwest). One of the question in the Southwest asks about how the Grand Canyon was formed and it is not addressed in the reading packet.

I would love to have permission to put this in a digit format for the students to pull the information up on their Chromebook. Our district is using Chromebooks for each student and I would like the information on there so that printing was not required.
On  April 15, 2014Jill Russ answered:
Kelly,
Thank you so much for letting me know about the mistakes. Both of those files have been corrected, and you can download the corrected versions from your Purchases page. The question about the Grand Canyon was in the wrong section of the reading questions. It should have been under Landmarks, not Land and Water.

To protect my intellectual property, I cannot allow any of my work to be posted anywhere that is accessible to the public for free. Since I depend on the income from my Teacher's Pay Teachers materials to help support my family, I cannot agree to let you post these materials where they would be freely available to anyone. I hope you understand my position.

However, you can share these files digitally with just the students in your classroom by saving a copy of the documents to each individual Chromebook. Or, your school's tech support may be able to put the files on your school server in such a way that the files only accessible to computers logged in on your school network. If you can find some way of digitally sharing these materials with your students that doesn't involve posting them on a publicly accessible website, you certainly have my permission to do that.

Product Questions & Answers

On  January 14, 2014Rande Lynne (TpT Seller) asked:
Your product is fantastic! Do you have an answer key for the reading questions? Also, would it be possible to get this where it included the capitals on the study guide and tests? If not, is there an editable version of the study guide, map, and tests so that I can include capitals as well?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  January 15, 2014Jill Russ answered:
I do not have an answer key for the reading questions yet. I am working on it.

I have updated all of the quizzes and study guides to include an optional page with the abbreviations and capitals. You can download the updated files from your Purchases page.

Hi Jill,

I just wanted to be sure that the study guides and quizzes I'm seeing that are sold separately are included in this package. The quizzes with pictures saying which would/would not belong are the same, correct?? I'm trying to find a way for my kids to begin learning the location of states and how to spell them correctly! I want to spread it out and have them learn them to know them, not just memorize them!! :) I didn't see any examples in the previews...so I just wanted to be sure! Thanks.

On  October 26, 2013Jill Russ answered:
Yes, the study guides and quizzes that are shown in my other listings are all included in this bundle. You will get a reading text, questions, study guide, quiz, and scrapbook for each region.

Thanks for asking!

We spend at least 12-15 weeks covering all of the regions with my third graders, and the other teachers I talked to felt that way too long and too much material for a unit test. Of course, your situation with your students will be different. You are welcome to make your own unit test for your classroom.

Hi Jill,
Can you tell me if there is a specific order you teach the regions? I ask because some of the test questions require knowledge of different regions. Is there an introductory packet of the five regions of the US that we should be teaching before the individual regions? Please recommend the best order to teach the regions based on the test questions. Thank you. Cristy

Hi, Cristy!
Since I made these packets to use with my students in Florida, I started with the Southeast region because I thought that would be most familiar to them. Then, I teach the Northeast, the Midwest, the Southwest, and finally the West region. If you go to this page on my website, http://www.mrsruss.com/Teachers/regions.html you will find some powerpoints with pictures illustrating the information in the reading packets and some other activities to go along with each region.

I just purchased this unit and I'm so excited about it! I will only be able to spend 3-4 days on each region. Do you have a timeline or specific lesson plans you use when teaching this unit?

If you're in a hurry, you can do one section of the region's packet in a day, which would take five days to cover one region. You can do it in four days if you combine Climate with another section.

For each day, I first have the students answer the "Before" questions on the reading guide. Then, we read and discuss the section and the students answer the rest of the questions on the reading guide. After that, they complete the section of the scrapbook. If you visit my website, http://mrsruss.com/Teachers/regions.html, you can find powerpoints with pictures that go along with each section of the reading packet.

If I have time to spend about two weeks on one region, the students read the section themselves and answer the questions the first day, and then we read the same section again and discuss it the second day. We spend some time practicing with the states on the map, and doing some art projects.

Thank you for your purchase! I hope your students enjoy it!
