I used this for my high-level ability group in our Kindergarten grade-level class. They LOVED it! We took the story problems, cut, pasted, and made a "reindeer math journal". The kids really enjoyed making silly pictures to go with the funny story problems!

Hi Deanna, Would it be possible for you to change some components to the reindeer glyph? I can not use it because it mentions Christmas. Could you please change do you have Christmas lights on house to just lights on the house and what are your favorite winter songs i.e. Walking in Winter Wonderland and Frosty the Snowman. The graph would have to be changed too. Thank you. I hope this isn't to much trouble.

How do you handle the realism vs. fantasy issue with reindeer at this age level when considering Santa Claus? You don't want to tell them that Santa's reindeer are make-believe, however, when discussing reindeer facts, we know that reindeer don't fly. Another teacher and I were just curious as to how you approach this? Thanks!!

Hi Deanna, I have purchased many of your units and love them all! I would like to incorporate this unit along with your Gingerbread unit but need to add some nonfiction to my curriculum. Could you please let me know if any non fiction work is incorporated into this unit. I have to leave any Christmas themes out of my teaching and wanted to make sure this would work.

I have a couple of questions re your Reindeer unit...terminology I am not familiar with. What is a "brace map"? I'm guessing it's a picture of the reindeer that students use to label the reindeer parts? Why is it called a reindeer "tree map"? It looks like students print facts under each word/reindeer...under 'are' one might print mammals or herbivores; under 'have' they print 4 hooves; under 'can' they print swim. For my kindies I have to give a little more support than you would with your firsties. :) I used to teach first grade and I definitely think that it would be perfect for first grade!
