Part I - Respiratory System
This PowerPoint begins with a video link about learning to breath / yoga. Students sit and learn some relaxed breathing. It is always a lot of fun. Students then learn the roles of the respiratory system with set of images and some facts about the respiratory system / oxygen. Students then learn cellular respiration and the equation. Some slide after help to test their knowledge. Student learn about the nose, nose hairs, and role of the nose in the respiratory system. Some neat images take you right inside. Students then learn about the swallowing reflex and the epiglottis with an exercise. The epiglottis is described (red slide note). A video link showing the epiglottis closing is provided. The larynx is shown and another video of the vocal cords (student favorite) is provided. Description of sound is provided. A little karoke with link is provided to get the class using their vocal cords. The trachea is described and referenced to the rings of cartilage (Form Follows Function) Why we cough and reference to to cilia in our throats is made in a series of slides. The bronchus and bronchi are addressed and reference to FFF. The lungs are described (red slide) and move to a close-up of the alveoli / gas exchange. Mention to TAR and smoking in the lungs is made. The diaphragm is described and the process of inhaling and exhaling. Student record a spreadsheet for lung capacity lab that explore vital and tidal capacity. Each student needs a balloon. Instructions, Questions, and Answers are all provided as built-ins. A series of hidden box games concludes this part of the PowerPoint and has the students guess a relevant picture hidden beneath some boxes. Each slide reveals more of the hidden picture beneath.
Part II -Danger of Smoking, Cancer, and More
This is a PowerPoint presentation includes built-in class notes (red slides), many important facts and statistics about smoking, video links, gross you out visuals, really neat smoking ads reflection worksheet that follows slideshow for classwork, two page homework sheet with answer key, lesson notes, and sends a very clear message that smoking causes many serious health effects. Also included is a section about skin cancer, and dangers associated with Meth.
Caution! This part of the lesson is very graphic, emotional, and powerful. It has on occasion made some students very emotional about a family member who smokes. Please preview the lesson entirely before showing students as this lesson doesn't water down the effects of smoking in any way.

Areas of Focus within this PowerPoint: This PowerPoint begins asking students to describe their connection / someone they know who has had Cancer, Next, Cancer is explained with a red slide (notes) with visuals, A series of pictures of tumors and cancers, some at the cellular level are shown, A list with visuals describes ways to help students avoid cancer. A special focus is placed on skin cancers and describes methods to avoid UV exposure. Also included is the A,B,C,D,E's of moles and skin cancer and a series of which mole may be cancerous questions. Ways to avoid cancer that are described are...Don't smoke or chew, Avoid UV exposure, Exercise Daily, Eat Healthy, Don't drink excessive alcohol, avoid radiation exposure, unprotected sex (HPV, and get regular check-ups with your doctor. The PowerPoint then describes how the number one way to avoid cancer is to not smoke / chew. The PowerPoint then begins an informative journey into the health affects of smoking, deaths with statistics, and much more. A worksheet is provided that has students respond to various videos / ads that they see. They must reflect to the effectiveness of graphic, reality, humor, and emotional ads. This balances some writing, videos, and presentation well. A 1-20 name which of the ingredients in a cigarette you would put in your body (Arsenic, Lead, etc ) and a 1-10 choose which hairy tongue you would kiss from some smokers quiz are provided. Tumors, Neck Breathers, Oral Cancers, and many other topics including advertising is provided. This is a PowerPoint that is powerful and informative.
