Responding to nonfiction is more important now more than ever with the Common Core. Now that students have to read 50% fiction & 50% nonfiction, ensure that they are responding at the highest levels. No longer is it good enough for students to just summarize nonfiction text or pull out all the facts and item knowledge, students must be able synthesis the author's claims and evaluate the reasons and evidence for their claims. Students must also determine the BIG IDEA of the text by synthesizing what it all means to answer the bigger question "So what?" and "How does this text have relevance in my life?" and "What is my role in this topic?"
