PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This list of 125 questions meets the Common Core Standards for literary texts. I use them in conjunction with a weekly reading log. I have included a sample of the log.

Common Core Standards:
Key Ideas and Details
1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from
it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn
from the text.
2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the
key supporting details and ideas.
3. Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of
a text.
Craft and Structure
4. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical,
connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape
meaning or tone.
5. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger
portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the
whole.
6. Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text.

Product Questions & Answers

On  April 29, 2013Ms Reading (TpT Seller) asked:
Would these be appropriate for 9th graders? Or too easy?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  April 29, 2013Nancy JolyCause answered:
They are very open ended. I designed them to fit different levels. I give them six questions a week, and they pick four to answer. Some, like the GATE students, I require to answer certain ones. They then have to answer in paragraph form with citations (either paraphrased or quoted) from the text to support their answer. So, for me, it is the depth of answer required that makes or breaks the difficulty of the question. If developmentally the student is still literal, that will be the answer you receive. The higher level students often astound me with their abstract connections. Hope this helps.
