This download contains a rocks and minerals vocabulary mat with definitions. Includes 18 words--rock, mineral, crystal, sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic, erosion, geology, magma, streak, hardness, cleavage, luster, etc.

Looking for a different way to have students practice vocabulary for science, I came up with the VOCABULARY MAT idea. Students have a mat of vocabulary words and a set of definitions. They work to place the definitions on the mat with more and more accuracy. I copy the mat onto cardstock for extra durability. You could also just use the vocabulary mat and definitions as regular flash cards.

You will also get my "much loved" beginning of unit vocabulary activities--sorting words from "I don't know this word at all" to "I know many ways I can use this word" AND "Categories and Labels" where students try to categorize the words and create labels BEFORE learning the meanings. On the first day of the science unit, this serves as a pre-assessment for me. Later in the unit, these activities can be used to show progress.

In this download, I am including a PDF and word file so that you can add your own words if necessary.

This is a great pre-assessment and then again a post-assessment activity where vocabulary is concerned. It really helped me to know what the students knew/remembered from past years and it also showed me what they learned (or didn't) so I could do some intervention. Great product!

I have a masters in Curriculum and Instruction in Reading and received National Boards Certification in Middle Childhood.
