After Romeo has been banished, I split my class into three groups to debate what the lovers should do: tell their parents everything, run away together, or forget about one another? These instructions prescribe roles for five members within each group. To ensure active participation, I assign any student not assigned another role to take notes on what all the groups say.
For an extra twist, appoint two students to be Romeo and Juliet and judge which group is most convincing.
This activity takes about 30 minutes, though it can be expanded or condensed.

The 2008-2009 school year is my fourth year at the Bath Central School District and the third year in which I've had the honor of preparing my district's juniors for the NYS Regents Exam.
