UPDATED: See below for the original product description. I have added a third document to the zip file. It is the same rubric, but with revised wording based on advice I received at a state writing test training this August. I had the opportunity to ask the director of the assessment office that scores our state writing tests to review my wording on the rubric.
ORIGINAL PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: I created this rubric to aid me in scoring student responses to short answer questions. The rubric does assume the response is a paragraph or so long and that it is a response to a content related question. This rubric is not designed to grade an extended response or an essay. The rubric has six levels from "check plus [100%]" to INC and includes a description for each level.
I have used this rubric for several years and found that it helped me in three key areas: quickness and ease in grading, helping students understand their scores and how to improve them, and helping parents understand the writing expectations in the content area.
The preview allows you to view a JPEG of the portrait version of the file. The zip file will include this version plus a landscape version. I used the landscape version to make a poster for display in the classroom and for inserting into power points.

Help
I have taught middle school for fifteen years in a large suburban district just north of Atlanta, Georgia. I have taught all three grade levels both language arts and social studies. This year, I will be serving as the school's full-time literacy coach.
