Ruby Holler Social Networking Facebook Activity
Common Core Reading: #3

As many of you know, social networking has become a very popular way for kids and adults to communicate with one another. So, in an effort to help connect reading to the lives of students, we created a Facebook activity for the novel Ruby Holler by the Newbery award winning author Sharon Creech. Ruby Holler is a delightful book about a beautiful, mysterious place where one may discover that it's never too late to be loved and hope is always nearby. Ruby Holler will take you on a journey of Dallas and Florida, and their experiences with being orphans. Mr. and Mrs. Trepid operate the Boxton Creek Home for Children, but will Dallas and Florida stay there? Or will their dreams take them to special place? Dallas and Florida have been shuffled between foster families and orphanages all their lives, longing only for a loving place to call home. Ruby Holler seems to change lives forever.

This activity contains a blank social network template page, a template page with directions, a step-by-step instructional page, and a grading rubric. For this activity, students are asked to complete several tasks. First, students are asked to write the name of the book at the top of the Facebook page. After that, they are asked to draw a colorful picture about a favorite character from the story. Then, students are asked to think of at least six friends that their character would like to invite on his/her social network Facebook page (two character friends from the story that they read, two story friends from another book, one famous friend such as an athlete, actor/actress, singer, and one of their own friends).

After that, students need to think of five events that their character would want to share with his/her six friends. Students will need to write the event name in the Facebook page and include at least 1 complete sentence about the event. For example, Heading to the lake¦ I am going fishing today with grandpa on Upper Long Lake. I'll let you know how I did later.
