Comprehension Connection (TpT Seller)
Disappointed in this one...was hoping that the unit would include before, during, and after activities. The unit didn't flow as the student would work through it...vocabulary for whole unit was in the front rather than as the student encounters them in the reading. Skills chosen wouldn't help readers develop skills...more about assessment than skill development.

I regret that you are disappointed. There are some points, however, upon which I am confused.
You mentioned "flow". This unit is heavy in writing experiences. They are dispersed within or follow the student response questions for a particular chapter, and support and expand the student's understanding of those sections of the plot as the student encounters them. A teacher may choose to assign them all or select as suits her or his class.
In addition there are several group activities - making a map of the area, and an oral group presentation, for instance - that are placed within the student responses where they are appropriate.
There is no assessment for skills in this unit, so I don't understand your comment. There are reviews of present and past tense of regular and irregular verbs, and a two page review lesson on what a verb is. This unit is for 5th through 8th graders, who would not need a beginners lesson on verbs.
I know from experience that students do acquire better skills at identifying, spelling, and later writing correct forms of verbs with those lessons.
As for the vocabulary - it is true. I work with students to master new vocabulary before they encounter it in their reading. Consequently, there is a vocabulary for the first half of the novel; at midway there is another vocabulary to work with.
