How can we make any sense of this tragedy? What can we say to our children at school on Monday? Let's use this opportunity to instill how important it is to be kind to one another. Let's come together in love and support. You can make this project with your own family, your class, or your whole school. The more hearts you have, the bigger the circle becomes. On each heart, students write kind words to another student. The hearts link to form a circle of kindness and love.
* Some users had trouble opening the PDF. I have created a zip file with this as an adobe file and a PowerPoint. YOu can print the powerpoint slide if the PDF won't open for you. I have alse been told that the link at the bottom right corner works better than the one at the top. If you have trouble with your download, try that. You can also right click the link, choose "save target as" and save to your computer. This worked for me. The link on the top would not open for me either! Please let me know if you have trouble. I have been emailing this to some teachers who could not open it.
I love this project. Whether or not you can talk to your class about the actual event, it is so important to take time to get them to think about how to be kind to each other. Thank you!
That is EXACTLY what I was thinking. I teach first. I did not bring the shooting up in my class. They are too young to understand - I think I am too young to understand it. We did make the project and take the time to be kind to each other. I think that is an important message that we can share. Thank you for participating in the project. :)

Will be doing on feb. 14th, we live near Sandy Hook
I am a speech/language specialist and I did this activity with my entire caseload. The children really enjoyed doing this and are excited to see the huge wreath when they return from break. Thank you for doing this. It helped spark some very interesting conversations. I'm planning on taking a picture and sending it to Sandy Hook as suggested - our wreath will have more than 60 hearts!!!
My 2nd and 3rd graders and I wrote kind thoughts on hearts for one another and created a wreath of friendship. It was a perfect way for us to come back to school on Monday, and truly helped us feel the love that centers all that we do at school. I think it helped me most of all. I shared it with my staff, and many used it as well. Thank you, Primary Techie.
I am so glad that you used this project and shared it with others. We are all thinking of Sandy Hook school. This is such a tragedy. I am glad that this helped you and your students.

Thank you very much for this project to help my students (and me) experience a positive side to this tragedy. I teach high school and my students forget - sometimes - to be nice and/or thoughtful to each other as they grow up. I love the idea of the broken heart and the mended one.
Thank you for this idea. It was a perfect closure activity after I talked with the kids during Morning Meeting. It helped them stay more focused on the families than the violence, and they were able to move on to academics a lot easier than I thought they would (more easily than I did!)
I am so glad to hear that. Thank you for taking part in this project.

Love this idea...thank you for sharing. I am a speech therapist and often my students are the focus of those unkind words, so this activity is greatly appreciated. What an important message and one too often forgotten..."treat others as you wish to be treated."
Greatly appreciated from the bottom of my teacher heart. Thank you for putting this together and making it available to us all. I'm not sure what my 4th graders will come in with this morning but I'm prepared by having your project. Thank you and God bless.
Thank you so much for sharing it with your students. I am shocked how many kids will be doing this project. I know it will mean so much to the teachers and staff at Sandy Hook to know they are in our thoughts.
Thank you for sharing a wonderful idea. I will share this with my staff tomorrow at two different schools and hope this helps with the healing process with our kiddos and staff members.
I hope it helps too. Good luck tomorrow. It is going to be a difficult day for us all.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I was going to have the class make cards but this is great and I will attach one card with it. I had no problem downloading when using the download now at the bottom of the screen. The one on the top would not work.
Thank you so much for the tip about the links. That will help a lot of people. I like the idea of sending a card with your project.

What a wonderful, thoughtful way to help us do something we otherwise would not have done in response to this terrible, inhumane act. We, as teachers, are all hurting for those teachers, parents, and children that have gone through this tragedy. Thank you!
Thank you. This is so hard on all of us. We need to use this opportunity to teach them the big picture. Hopefully, it will help prevent more tragedies in the future.

Thank you for this-I didn't know where to begin tomorrow, and this is a great place. Thank You again.
Thanks for helping us all with a way to help our students reach out to Sandy Hook. This tragedy reminds me so much of the dear little lives lost in the Oklahoma City Bombing. Our students want and need to have a way to reach out to others who are sad.
You are welcome. I am so glad that so many schools are taking part in this. Students all over the country will be focusing on love in memory of those lost.

Thank you for creating something to show our support all those affected by the events of Friday. Would it be OK if I shared this activity with my school? I will be sure to attached a link and encourage to check out your other resources. Thank you for your consideration!
Of course you can share it! I did not make this activity to promote my store in any ways. You absolutely DO NOT need to link it back to me in any way. Share it with anyone and everyone!

What a beautiful way to focus on kindness ,such a simple project for the kids to make. The circle turns out beautifully! Thank you!
No question, don't stress! :P Just wanted to share a blog post I did about using your hearts. The activity came just at the right time for a student who needed some encouragement. You can see the post here - http://flapjackeducationalresources.blogspot.com/2012/12/five-hundred-followers-freebie-heart.html.
Thanks for sharing! Your project turned out really cute! So sweet! Have a great Christmas!

My students in rural Iowa were bothered with this senseless tragedy this morning, and were asking what we could do. I would appreciate it if you could e-mail it to me as well... What a wonderful project. Thanks for creating it!

Bummer ... my school district blocked it ... or it hasn't come through! :(
Could you please try the hotmail address at sarabeth14@hotmail.com ... thank you again!
Ok. It just went to the hotmail account. Have you tried the link on the bottom right corner or right clicking and choosing save? Those things worked for me when the top link would not open.
Just sent it! Let me know if you still have problems. I will find a way to get it to you.

I am having trouble downloading the file also. If you are able to send it to me that would be great. Thank you for doing this. We will definitely be creating this tomorrow morning. kstwaffle@comcast.net

I can't download this...keep getting an Internal Error 500. I would like to use with my 5th graders tomorrow. Can you email it to me? paigebeaty@att.net
This has been downloaded MANY times in the past few hours. It may be too much on the system???? I am not sure. I created a zip file which contains the PDF and a powerpoint. You can print the slide that contains the image. I know that seems weird, but it is easier for me to create files in powerpoint. Please let me know if this still doesn't work for you. I can also try emailing you the file if you send me your address.

I have taught third grade and preschool, but my true passion is for first. I have been in first-grade for seven years now and have no plans to ever leave it! First grade is my home.
