Karen Ostlund and Sheryl Mercier combine talents to provide detailed instructions for setting up and using cooperative and collaborative learning groups for science investigations and activities at the intermediate grade levels. Task/role cards, social skills, assessment tools with rubric, and classroom management tips are provided in this package. A one -hour science lesson is also included to introduce cooperative/collaborative learning to your students.
The purpose of a cooperative learning groups is to maximize the learning of each member. One way to promote interdependence is to assign complementary and interconnected roles to group members. Each group member is assigned a responsibility that the group needs to function. These include a Principal Investigator to manage the learning task and make sure everyone in the group understands the learning, a Materials Manager to distribute the required materials for the group, a Data Collector to record and report information gathered to the class, and a Timekeeper to keep track of time and make sure all group members are on task.

I use these in all my subject areas all day. The kids sit in their roles for one week then change roles. After 4 weeks they change groups. If a group does not get along or cooperate then they get to stay together until they can.
