This set of activities is meant to introduce, practice, reinforce, and review the science vocabulary for a unit on rocks and minerals.
Flashcards (4 pages)
The flashcards are meant to be printed on cardstock. You could post them during your unit study on force or add them to your science Word Wall.
Match-Ups (6 pages)
These cards are meant to be printed on cardstock and laminated for durability. They can be used for a Mix-Match activity, where the students walk around finding the members of their triad. They can also be used as an anchor station activity. An answer key for self checking is included.
Know or No (1 page)
This activity helps you assess your students� prior knowledge of the vocabulary words. Magnet Word Summaries (3 pages)
This strategy works especially well with content vocabulary. After collecting words, students write a summary sentence about each main idea word.
Word Sort (1 page)
In this closed word sort the categories are defined. It requires critical thinking.
Find Someone Who (2 pages)
This is an active lesson, it gives students the opportunity to move, discuss their understanding, and practice the words. An answer key is included.
Alphaboxes Pair Square (1 page)
Students write words in all the boxes that trying to find at least one word for each letter of the alphabet.
Word Map (1 page)
This activity helps students organize their thinking.
Tree Maps (6 pages)
These maps encourage critical thinking. Students are asked to think about words in new ways.
Connect 2 (1 page)
Students will create a sentence that shows their understanding of and connections made between two words. This activity may require some teacher modeling.
Analogies (1 page)
This is another activity that requires critical thinking and may require some teacher modeling.
List � Group � Label (1 page)
This is a brainstorming activity. Students list all of the words they can think of to go with a concept or word. The words are then sorted into groups of related ideas. Students label the groups to show the relationships.
