These Roll and Read activities provide students with fluency practice. Print out each Roll and Read for each story. The Roll and Read sheets are leveled for differentiation: below level, on level, and above level. Have students work with a partner. Partners take turn rolling a dice. Whatever number they roll is the sentence they must read. After reading it, the student paces a tally mark under the correct dice to tally how many times each sentence was read.
To save on printing, consider laminating the sheets or placing them in a page protector and using Vis-a-Vis markers or dry erase markers so they can be used again and again!

Even if you do not use Scott Foresman Reading Street, you may find these useful for your students! Unit 4 covers: long a (ai, ay), possessives, long e (ea), inflected endings, long o (oa, ow), three letter blends, long i (ie, igh), kn, wr, compound words, vowels ew, ue, ui, suffixes -ly, -ful, vowels in moon.

I love that the sentences are differentiated. I make a green, yellow or blue line at the top of the pages to let students know what level they are. Then I put them in clear plastic sheets in my word work center so they can use a dry erase marker to make the tallies.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching for seven years. I taught in a 2nd and 3rd grade multiage class for one year. I ran our school computer lab and taught technology lessons to all students in K-5 for two years. The 2012-2013 school year will be my fifth year teaching first grade, and love it!
