Here's a great project to let students be creative and learn more about the states. Students will enjoy my personal teacher-created unit on secret states where students turn states into art creations and instead of a research report, they provide clues about their secret states while they learn. Make learning geography fun AND educational! Make teaching geography easier on you too.

In the end, each student will have a secret state project, and you will have some great resources for a class book or a bulletin board.
Give each student a different secret state page. Each secret state page has an outline of a state that has been rotated. The students will use crayons, markers, pens, or any art materials to recreate the state. The key is to disguise the state and be creative! A 2nd grader turned the state of Alabama into a lion.

After the students have disguised their states, instead of writing a traditional state research report, students provide clues to the identity of their state. You can even choose just to use the secret state art project and omit the report too.

I've provided a page with clue suggestions. You can let student choose the topics or assign them. I hope your students enjoy this creative twist on a state research paper.
