This chapter-by-chapter graphic organizer helps students to recognize the metaphor of transformation that takes place in this novel. Students must record character traits for each person/chapter, both before they become involved with the garden and after. The organizer, which is 3 pages long, concludes with essay questions relating to the metaphor of transformation, which could serve as an assessment at the end of the novel.

I used this with my 7th graders and was amazed at what depths many students took this. It challenged my AG students, but was simple enough to help my special programs students to see the overall picture.

And because the organizer goes chapter by chapter through the novel, it is a great thing to have out in class each day--and helps to inspire excellent class discussions!
