This sheet aids my students in showing their work for word problems and standardized test questions. Eventually students move away from this sheet and just fold a sheet of copy paper to resemble boxes, and number it themselves so they can use it during state testing. Students are required to locate key math words (see my other download for this) that indicate the operation(s) they should use. More importantly they must write the key word down and the operational symbol in each problem box. Other techniques include writing the mnemonic TH H T O in a T chart style for place value problems and drawing arrays or using chants. (See my other download for a rounding rap they can memorize and use.) My class averages in the 70th percentile or higher on state exams using this test prep technique. My school's population consists of 98% poverty and second language learners but my students prove they can succeed in spite of these statistics. Don’t forget to model how to use the strategies on an overhead transparency.

I have taught elementary school for 8 years with the majority of my experience in teaching 3rd grade in an urban setting with a majority of bilingual students. I speak some Spanish so I am better able to communicate with the parents of my students. I have also taught for one year each in 2nd and 4th along with sub experience in grades 1st & 5th as well. Currently alongside teaching third grade I am a mentor to new teachers as well as a workshop presenter on topics including Reading Strategies, Math Interventions, Classroom Management and Technology in the Classroom. I've also worked with children from infant to 18 years in other settings including early childhood development centers, after-school programs, summer camps, at-risk youth programs, juvenile detention centers and Special Olympics.
