**NOTE: Be advised that this is a writing sample. The reading selections are not provided, as it would be unrealistic for me to purchase the copyrights. They are, however, common literary pieces available in many textbooks: "The Race to Save Apollo 13" (by Michael Useem) and "By the Waters of Babylon" (by Stephen Vincent Benét.) I can find both pieces readily on the internet, but if you are unable to locate these pieces, your use of the sample may be impaired.**
This product is a single-page sample to use as a model for students over how to write a "3" response on the crossover short answer response on the STAAR Test. The sample utilizes the APE Mnemonic Device, which is a different product I have listed. However, this sample may be used independently; it is not necessary to purchase the mnemonic in order for this to make sense.
This product was born out of necessity for sample writing items as Texas classrooms transition from the TAKS to the STAAR Test, which we have found very few materials to support. It is intentionally written in my own handwriting, as I try to use models that are as close as possible to what students themselves will produce on the test. It is in the standard, 10-line format that the test will use.
This particular short answer response sample is a crossover between the selections "The Race to Save Apollo 13" and "By the Waters of Babylon." The actual question is "How are the themes of 'The Race to Save Apollo 13' and 'By the Waters of Babylon' similar? Use evidence from the texts to support your answer."
Our school has had great success on the short answer response. In each of the years prior to using the APE mnemonic device, we averaged about 2-3 short answer responses yearly that scored a "3"...but since using it, we have achieved 40+ per year (with a student population of 400).
