Tired of teaching phonics the old-fashioned way? Want your students to have fun as you help them recognize short vowel sounds? This board game is a great way to introduce, practice, and reinforce the identification of those sounds. It can be used for small group instruction as well as an independent literacy center choice activity.

This game consists of a double-sided game board and 72 game cards. Each card depicts an object whose name contains one of the five short vowel sounds. Players take turns pulling cards, determining what sound they hear, and checking the accuracy of their guesses by looking at the answer printed on the back. Students move forward on the game board if their guesses are correct, winning the game when they finally reach the last space. Detailed instructions for assembling and playing the game are also included. The only thing you need to add are the game pieces kids use to mark their place on the board. Here's to having fun teaching and learning!

I played this game with my jolly phonics group they loved it. I would love to see one made with the ou, oi, ai, etc. sounds.

Learning is so much more fun for student and teacher alike when games are used to reinforce important concepts. I've made hundreds of phonics games but haven't had the time to convert them into digital form. That may be my summer mission this year. Thanks for the suggestion! Have you tried my concentration-style card games for short and long vowel sounds yet? They might be fun for you to try as well. - Jane
