PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Now you can download Simple Steps to Sentence Sense by Charlene Tess. This is the grammar workbook that is used by students throughout the United States and some foreign countries.

If you have ever struggled with using an English textbook, have had students who just never seemed to understand the many grammar rules, had ESL or other students who found English grammar a complete mystery, have had special needs students who required much more concrete methods of instruction to grasp English grammar than your textbook would allow, then this is the book you need. If you teach a language other than English and can't get students to understand subject-verb agreement because they can't identify the subject or the verb, then you'll simply love this ebook.

This powerful book comes complete with lessons written directly to the student, overhead transparency masters for easy instruction, group and individual practice pages, reviews, and tests. For the teacher's convenience, all the answers are at the back of the book. It includes the unique S.A.M. sheet (Sentence Analysis Map) that students will use to guide them through the eight simple steps. Each step has Writing Connection pages so the student can apply the information to his or her independent writing. An advanced sentence analysis chapter is included to help students prepare for AP and SAT exams.

This eBook is aligned with ELA.Literacy Common Core Standards.

Very comprehensive with many activities to work on in groups or individually, however I was hoping the resource didn't look too "textbook". I also wish there were some variety to the activities for students, but this is something I can do myself. Thank you for creating a very comprehensive guide.
On  September 23, 2012Charlene Tess answered:
You're welcome. I think you will find that there is variety in the writing connection pages. The other exercises are repetitious on purpose.

I have been looking for an effective approach to teaching grammar to my high school English classes. Teaching grammar and teaching grammar effectively are two different things. Having only read through the first few pages of this workbook, I am already excited to bring it into the classroom. For any teachers looking for a good method of teaching sentence structure and grammar - this is what you want! Not only is it a good tool for students, but it also makes me more comfortable teaching the subject. Thanks!

On  December 30, 2011,  Jillian W. asked:
How would you successfully implement this into a 45 minute class period? How much time would you spend on each lesson? Is this a "unit" or would you do a lesson every day?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  December 30, 2011Charlene Tess answered:
Note: Students are allowed to use the SAM sheet on all assignments and on tests.
Day 1
I would give each student a copy of the SAM sheet. (They keep this). Then I would give each student a copy of the lesson notes and go through the lesson using the overhead projection sheets to illustrate. Next, assign the group practice exercise. I usually assigned even numbered sentences to one row of students, and odd numbered sentences to the next row. If time permits, trade papers and grade aloud. (The answers are in the back of the book.) If there is not enough time, do the grading the following day.
Day 2
Pass out the individual practice exercise sheet. Depending on the level of your students, you can assign all 20 of the sentences or just a few. It is totally up to you. No one knows your students as well as you do. If you need to do something else on Day 2, assign the individual practice exercise sheet as homework. Trade and grade the individual practice sentences. Be sure to take the grades. Students will do exceptionally well on these assignments and making a really high grade will motivate them.
Day 3
Give students the test. You can assign all of the sentences or just 10. (If you have the time, assign all 20 sentences because students will have a chance at a better grade.) Have students turn in the papers, but wait until the next day to grade the papers. (Do not grade them yourself. Students need to hear the answers to reinforce what they have learned.)
Day 4
Assign the writing connection exercise. (If you do not have time for this in class, assign it as homework.)

The following week, you can start the next step. Doing it this way will give you time to work in literature assignments and other necessary lessons.
The KEY to my way of teaching is to not skip any of the steps and to do the steps in order. You are free to shorten the assignments as you wish.

On  December 28, 2011,  Buyer asked:
I am also curious about seeing a sample page. What I did see of your work looks great, but do students transfer and apply what they are learning? I work with special education high school studens and sentence structure is so difficult for many.
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  December 29, 2011Charlene Tess answered:
Thanks so much for your question. The answer is yes, students do transfer and apply what they are learning. In each step there is a writing connection page to allow students to take what they have learned and apply it to their writing.

Special education students have been using my book successfully for many years. It works especially well for them because the steps are presented in logical sequential steps.
If you will email me at Charlenetess@yahoo.com, I will send you sample pages so you can see for yourself.
All the best,

Can this be used in a 7th grade Language Arts class...or is it really for high school?

Thanks,

Teachers Pay Teachers
On  February 6, 2011Charlene Tess answered:
Yes, it is well suited for 7th grade. The High School edition has an advanced section for Advanced Placement Students. The Middle School edition has the same lessons, but does not contain the advanced section. Thanks for you interest in my books. Please let me know if I can help in any way. All the best, Charlene
