This Smart Art activity is a creative, hands-on way for students to represent the different kinds of weather they are learning about as well as the variety of climates that exist in different geographic regions. It is also a great way to introduce or reinforce mapping skills as you discuss directionality and how differences in temperature occur because of proximity to poles or the equator.
As children construct the map, they will label bodies of water and write amazing weather facts using the fact templates included in this packet. You may want to use the fact templates as a guided writing activity or provide blank paper for more proficient writers, allowing them to research and record their own facts. Because this activity combines science with writing and art, it is multisensory and connects to several of the multiple intelligences.

I love this weather map. We do collaborative theme groupings and this project will work out great for them as well as learning a ton. I do live in Alaska and it would have been nice to have a little something added for that as well. Perhaps Hawaii too! Great map!

I don't have a specific curriculum for teaching weather. I've just pulled ideas and lessons from several different resources over the years. I do have a few favorite books that I use each year (some fiction, some nonfiction). When I get a moment to pull those titles, I'll send you that list. Have a great day!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
