Smart Start in Language Arts is a comprehensive reading/writing/spelling program for grades one and two. This 1300 page reproducible, all-inclusive program is bound in a D-ring binder. Each student lesson is supported by: co-ordinating phonics worksheets, word analysis exercises, sentence writing, spelling practice, printing, and punctuation / capitalization exercises. Repeated reading books are made by students using sentence strips to master sight words in the context of little stories. Lists of themed picture books build towards creative story writing. There are six story units. Each culminates in writing a story which uses three sequenced pictures. Teaching explanations for new material in the lessons are placed prior to a new concept being introduced in student work. Flip to the next day and you'll see what you are teaching and receive an explanation when necessary. Four reading assessments are provided for various stages of the year. Additonal support/review material is included behind the last tab of the binder in the Smart Start Companion. The only additional material required to complete this program is the classroom library.
Audio/Visual: There are 35 puppet shows on three DVD's to introduce 26 alphabet sounds and the phonemes ee, ow, ck, or, ur, th, ch, sh, wh, long vowel with silent e words, and long vowel with 2 vowels together. Printable phonics and sight word games, PDF version of the Smart Start in Language Arts binder for SMART Boards(non-printable), and thirteen I-SPY photos for alphabet sorting game are stored on a single CD.
This program has been used successfully with upper elementary students who have not yet learned or had difficulty learning to read.
